Burgfest at Burghausen Castle in Germany is a spectacular historical event that has been held regularly for several decades. The Burgfest historical festival includes a large historical market and extensive historical encampments spread throughout the castle. There are also fencing, dancing, and acrobatic performances, as well as evening concerts. The number of visitors is counted in the hundreds, if not thousands, every year. Burghausen Castle itself is also the longest castle in Central Europe.
Arma Bohemica, the Czech representation
We attend this spectacular event together with other groups from the Czech Republic under the joint name Arma Bohemica. Together, we prepare a special performance for each day. It consists of historical and oriental dances, free and stage fencing, and a good dose of theater and pantomime. In short, we always put together something unique from the art of us all.
The Pub performance
As our most successful performance, we would definitely highlight the show with the working title The Pub. In this almost hour-long performance, we tell a short story about a regular village dance, which is visited by unknown strangers and a dancer with her bodyguard. After a few beers, a fight breaks out in the pub and the bodyguard loses his life. However, the dancers are not deterred and avenge their bodyguard with a ruse.
Historical parade at Burghausen Castle
In addition to concerts, one of the highlights of the festival is the parade, which takes place on Saturday afternoon. The parade starts in the streets just beyond the square, continues across the square and into the streets, and ends at the castle. Dozens of groups and several hundred people take part. Such a large display of costumes, especially those of 16th-century Landsknechts, is truly unparalleled.
